Information overload
Exactly how much of information available today we actually use in our day to day life? Tonnes of webpages, books and CD ROMs are available today on various subjects. As a human being, we plan for future and tend to store scarce resources. Food grains, money, gold and what not. In that list, now we can add information. My laptop's harddisk shows 30% free space. Who stole my bytes? On an average, i have spent probably 5 minutes a year to delete what is not needed anymore. Classic case of information lust! How about corporates then? How much money it cost them on accumulation and storage of data which they will seldom need? And more importantly, how often the information available is utilized to make rational choice?
Seems as human beings, we have started to store as much information as we could so that it could be used/abused in unforeseeable future. Some people call it psychological value of unused data.
